We are pleased to present some of the work of the well-known Lebanese artist Hélène Khoury in cooperation with The American Book Center. Khoury's work focuses on women's rights and female identity and has been part of more than 20 exhibitions in The Netherlands and Belgium.
About the artist
Hélène Khoury was born in Beirut (Lebanon) and currently lives and works in The Netherlands. Women's rights and female identity are the subjects of her work, whereby her experiences of life, emotion, daily news, and the status of the contemporary woman become source material in the creation of her art. Next to her profession as artist, she is also an advisor on the artistic field for the Municipality of Krimpen a/d IJssel.
In her work she tries to call attention to the injustice that women experience by bringing this conflict to the forefront, in the hope that this contributes to a solution. What concerns her is the process of breaking taboos and old traditions. She does not aim at one material or technique. She is continuously in search of new forms of expression which can be the reason for her to realize an art work. Every material or technique calls for another approach: there she plunges into her feelings and lets it loose.
